SGA Network Meeting 2014
26th - 28th Oct 2014, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates
The 5th Sub-Global Assessment Network meeting was hosted and convened by the SGAN Secretariat, and supported by the UNEP Regional Office for West Asia, and the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW). The meeting brought together over 40 ecosystem assessment practitioners from across the globe, to discuss the progress of the SGAN in 2013 and 2014, recent advances in the field of ecosystem assessment, and the plans for the future as the network continues to move forward.

SGA Network Meeting 2012
26th - 29th Nov 2012, Stellenbosch, South Africa
Organised by the SGAN Secretariat in partnership with CSIR (The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) over 80 ecosystem assessment practitioners from across the globe met to discuss the progress of the SGAN in 2012, recent advances in the field of ecosystem assessments, and to outline a vision for the network in 2013.

SGA Network Meeting 2011
11th - 15th Dec 2011, Bilbao, Spain
Convened by UNEP-WCMC and The Cropper Foundation, the meeting was hosted by the University of the Basque Country, UNESCO Katedra and UNESO Etxea. Over 70 network members attended this meeting which brought together practitioners in the field of ecosystem assessments, to discuss the restructuring of the SGA Network, as well as share information on challenges, opportunities and lessons learnt in sub-global assessments. The overall objective of the meeting was to establish the key roles and activities of the SGA Network, including its positioning within the global assessment landscape.

7th Annual International Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP) Conference
6th -7th Sept 2014, San Jose, Costa Rica
The SGA Network Secretariat hosted two conference sessions at the 7th annual ESP conference. A 2 day pre-conference training session introducing the Toolkit of Ecosystem Service Site-Based Assessment (TESSA) held in collaboration with Jenny Merriman and Isadora Angarita-Martinez of BirdLife International. Plus, a session on bringing local assessments and experiences to bear on decision making and human well-being at larger scales.

Workshop for the SADC Member States: Capacity building for undertaking ecosystem assessments
3rd - 6th Feb 2014, Pretoria, South Africa
The SGAN Secretariat, in collaboration with the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the UNEP Regional office for Africa and the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), convened a four-day capacity building workshop for policy makers and practitioners from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) member state countries. Aimed at enhancing participant's understanding of the ecosystem assessment concept and methodology, the workshop also increased participants’ awareness of how their countries can engage with IPBES.

6th Annual International Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP) Conference
26th Aug - 1st Sept 2013, Bali, Indonesia
The SGAN Secretariat with support from members of the network convened a Special Session on ‘Bridging the science-policy interface: experiences from, and the role of sub-global assessments.’ In collaboration with the Natural Capital Project the SGAN also convened a 2.5 day post-conference training session on ‘Tools for integrated ecosystem assessment and management, including hands-on training with InVEST and lessons learned from sub-global assessment case studies’.

SGA Network Side Event at IPBES-1

Attended by over 70 participants, the event was primarily designed to promote dialogue about the synergies between, and benefits offered by the SGA and TEEB networks for IPBES.

Workshop for the ASEAN Member States: Capacity Building for Undertaking Ecosystem Assessments
29th Oct – 2nd Nov 2012, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
In collaboration with the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB), the UNEP Regional Office for Asia Pacific (ROAP), the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM), and with support from the Norwegian Directorate for Nature Management, the SGAN Secretariat convened a five-day capacity building workshop on the ecosystem assessment concept and process and to support ASEAN member states to engage with the IPBES process.

IUCN World Conservation Congress: Conservation Campus: Tools and Techniques for undertaking and using ecosystem assessments
6th - 15th Sept 2012, Jeju, South Korea
The SGAN Secretariat convened and facilitated a one day capacity building conservation campus on undertaking and using ecosystem assessments through developing skills for measuring and valuing ecosystem services. The Secretariat worked with a number of partners from related initiatives – e.g. the Ecosystem Service Partnership, The Natural Capital Project, TEEB, UNEP and IUCN – to deliver the training through a combination of presentations, interactive exercises and facilitated discussions.

Economic value of ecosystem services: Regional Workshop on "Capacity Building Workshop Valuation of Ecosystem Services for Effective Public Policy in Latin America"
13th – 17th Aug 2012, Quito, Ecuador
The workshop, which was organised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in close cooperation with the National Planning and Development Secretariat (SENPLADES) and the Ministry of Environment on behalf of the Government of Ecuador, and the Latin America Faculty of Social Sciences (FLASCO-Ecuador), aimed to set up a Latin America platform (network or think tank) dealing with policy innovations for realising the values of ecosystem services.

Mainstreaming Ecosystem Services into Development Policy: Approaches and Opportunities
23rd - 24th May 2012, Port of Spain, Trinidad
This international workshop formed a partnership meeting for the Project for Ecosystem Services (ProEcoServ). It presented a discussion forum for the pilot countries of ProEcoServ (Chile, South Africa and Lesotho, Trinidad and Tobago and Vietnam).

Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP) Conference 2012: Ecosystem services come of age: linking science, policy, and participation for sustainable human well-being
31st Jul – 4th Aug 2012, in Portland, USA
A Working Group session was convened by members of the SGAN Secretariat, with support from Roy Haines-Young (University of Nottingham, UK) on Tools and approaches for monitoring and measuring ecosystem services at the national and sub-national level.

Regional workshop on "Mainstreaming Ecosystem Services Approaches into Development: Application of Economic Valuation for Designing Innovative Response Policies"
6th - 9th Feb 2012, Bangkok, Thailand
The workshop, which was organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in close cooperation with the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB), aimed to enhance capacity of policy-makers and technical experts in applying methodologies that can assist them in mainstreaming ecosystem management approaches into poverty alleviation and development policies.
