Supporting ecosystem assessments in the context of IPBES

With support from UNEP International Ecosystem Management Partnership (UNEP-IEMP), the UNEP Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (UNEP ROAP) and the Norwegian Government, members of the SGA Network Secretariat convened a four-day capacity building workshop which brought together twenty-nine assessment practitioners from across the Asia Pacific region.

SGA Network Meeting 2014
26th - 28th Oct 2014, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates
The 5th Sub-Global Assessment Network meeting was hosted and convened by the SGAN Secretariat, and supported by the UNEP Regional Office for West Asia, and the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW). The meeting brought together over 40 ecosystem assessment practitioners from across the globe, to discuss the progress of the SGAN in 2013 and 2014, recent advances in the field of ecosystem assessment, and the plans for the future as the network continues to move forward.

Speaker: Ersin Esen, GEF Task Manager – Biodiversity, Division of Environmental Policy Implementation (DEPI), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
The SGAN Secretariat partnered with Ersin Esen to deliver an introduction to ProEcoServ, followed by examples, case studies and an outline of lessons learned from implementing the project. Providing a range of examples of how mainstreaming can be used at various scales, for different ecosystem services, and in different institutional contexts, ProEcoServ has the overall goal to integrate findings and tools of ecosystem service assessments into national and local policy and decision making.

7th Annual International Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP) Conference
6th -7th Sept 2014, San Jose, Costa Rica
The SGA Network Secretariat hosted two conference sessions at the 7th annual ESP conference. A 2 day pre-conference training session introducing the Toolkit of Ecosystem Service Site-Based Assessment (TESSA) held in collaboration with Jenny Merriman and Isadora Angarita-Martinez of BirdLife International. Plus, a session on bringing local assessments and experiences to bear on decision making and human well-being at larger scales.

Introduction to assessing current ecosystem services and impacts using Co$ting Nature and WaterWorld

Speaker: Dr Mark Mulligan, King's College, London and UNEP-WCMC senior fellow
The SGAN Secretariat partnered with Dr Mark Mulligan to present short introductions on the Co$ting Nature and WaterWorld tools. This was followed by a demonstration on how to map current ecosystem service provision and impacts of projected business-as-usual, land use change, and conservation intervention scenarios.

The SGAN Secretariat partnered with representatives of the NatCap Project to present a training session introducing the Natural Capital Approach, using examples from coastal Belize and Colombia. Additional preparation for the content of the webinar can be found at the NatCap online course.
