The Role of National Ecosystem Assessments in Influencing Policy Making
This paper draws insights from experience with National Ecosystem Assessments (NEAs) undertaken in the UK, Japan, Spain, and Portugal, as well as other ecosystem assessments undertaken at regional and international geographical scales, and highlights lessons learned so that the impact of NEAs on policy can be enhanced. The paper concludes by identifying key issues needed to develop practical guidance for successful ecosystem assessments.

IPBES Catalogue of Assessments
This online catalogue is a metadatabase, bringing together information on and experiences derived from undertaking assessments of biodiversity and ecosystem services from the global to the subnational scales. The primary objective of the catalogue is to provide an open and accessible forum through which lessons can be learned from existing and ongoing assessment processes so as to inform the future development of IPBES. It offers direct access to assessment reports and supporting technical documents as a resource for assessment practitioners and policymakers.

Contribution of the Sub-Global Assessment Network to addressing the priority capacity-building needs of the Platform
An information note prepared by UNEP-WCMC, in its capacity as the Secretariat of the SGAN, was submitted to IPBES for the Third session of plenary in Bonn, 2015. It presents a briefing paper on the contribution of the SGAN to addressing the priority capacity-building needs of the IPBES, which were proposed by the Task Force on Capacity-Building.

How the Sub-Global Assessment Network and the intergovernmental science-policy platform on biodiversity and ecosystem services can be mutually supportive
An information note prepared by the SGAN Secretariat on behalf of its members was submitted to IPBES for the Second session of plenary in Panama, 2012. It details the potential for the SGAN to contribute to all four functions identified for IPBES and provides a range of examples on how the SGAN could support IPBES activities.

Lessons learned from carrying out ecosystem assessments: Experience from members of the Sub-Global Assessment Network
The document brings together the experience of over 70 practitioners, who have carried out ecosystem assessments in more than 30 countries worldwide at differing scales. It presents their key lessons learned and offers a set of simple, practical first steps for instigating new assessments. It is hoped the lessons will help ecosystem assessment practitioners to define priorities, overcome common challenges and create a clear pathway for action.

The SGAN Secretariat partnered with Dr Benjamin Burkhard to present and discuss the different challenges related to ecosystem service (ES) quantification and mapping. Challenges include: the regularly occurring issues of problematic data acquisition; the distinction between potential ecosystem service supply, flows and demands; the correct delineation of service providing units (SPUs) and benefitting areas (SBAs), and their spatial relations and temporal scales.
